Jiufen Old Street
九份老街
Jiufen is an old mountain village in Ruifang District of New Taipei City, and has perhaps the best old street in all of Taiwan, with authentic Taiwanese food, sloping steps, traditional Chinese architecture, and great views of Shen’Ao and Keelung Harbors. There are also multiple historical sights within the town. The entire village is built on a mountain slope so that you can enjoy views of Taiwan’s north coast from basically anywhere in the city.
Wulai Old Street
烏來老街
Wulai has become a major tourist attraction, partly because of its close proximity to Taipei. It has museums, waterfalls, a gondola, a train, an old street night market, and most of all hot springs. It has an old Japanese-era coal mining railroad track which has been restored with a working train. In addition, there are hikes, wildlife, and endless mountain scenery to explore.
Shiding Old Street 石碇老街Shiding Old Street (aka Shiding East Street) is a small street in the busiest part of the mountainous Shiding District in New Taipei. There are some great restaurants here, an old mining town feel, great views of old multi-story houses towering over the rivers, and beautiful surrounding mountains. Also, there are some great hiking trails and scenery nearby.
Sanxia’s Indigo Dyeing
三峽藍染
Indigo dyeing is an ancient art of dyeing and patterning clothes with an especially beautiful blue dye. The dye itself comes from the indigo plant, which grows very well in humid mountain climates. When fermented, the plant produces a brilliant blue dye.
Songshan Cultural Park & Huashan Creative ParkWulai has become a major tourist attraction, partly because of its close proximity to Taipei. It has museums, waterfalls, a gondola, a train, an old street night market, and most of all hot springs. Sanxia Old StreetSanxia Old Street otherwise known as San Jiao Yong Old Street (三角涌老街) is located in the Sanxia district of New Taipei City and is a popular old street for the residents of northern Taiwan. The street is about 260 meters long, but don’t tell that to the people going on the weekends who will ultimately have to endure a massive traffic jam to get there!
New Taipei City Yingge Ceramics Museum TaiwanThe Yingge Ceramics Museum is the first professional pottery museum in Taiwan. First planned by Magistrate Yu Ching, the museum was finally completed after 12 years of construction with efforts of 3 magistrates. The museum opened on November 26, 2000. The museum is made up with modern constructing materials and transparent glass, presenting a limitless sense of space and the beauty of simplicity. The special structure also enhances the exhibition. The Yingge Ceramics Museum presents 200 years of ceramic techniques and folk culture in Taiwan. At the same time, the museum also has educational function with its modern technology, making it an ideal place for families to visit at leisure.
Fort San Domingo is one of the oldest buildings in Taiwan, with a nearly 400 year history. Originally built by the Spanish, it was handed over to nine different nations including the Dutch, Qing, Japan, British, Australia, USA, and the ROC. Now it is a popular tourist destination in Tamsui.
